Medical Clearance Progress

So, just to start off, I'd like to dispel a myth. That myth is that joining the Peace Corps is essentially free. That is not true for anyone I have spoken with or the hundreds of anecdotes I have read online over the past year. Maybe someday I will disclose what it is costing us monetarily, but you can likely guess from the following list of requirements (Peace Corps covers only $60 for dental and about $150 for the physical):

Feb 27:
-Nick and Alison are sent medical packets.

March 2:
-Nick and Alison receive medical packets.

March 5:
-Alison gets dental x-rays and cleaning.

March 12:
-Nick gets dental x-rays, cleaning, and examination.
-Alison gets dental examination.
-Nick gets general physical, additional questioning, TB skin test, and 6 blood tests.
-Alison gets general physical, additional questioning, TB skin test, and 6 blood tests.

March 14:
-Alison and Nick go back to get skin TB tests read.

March 15:
-Nick gets additional tests done for lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, and thyroid studies.

March 19:
-Nick and Alison get all lab results back and check over forms for any omissions.

March 20:
-Alison faxes in 2 medical packets (with the exception of immunization forms), and an addendum still be filled out for Nick
-Alison faxes in 4 reimbursement requests (that's $435 coming back!)
-Alison faxes in 2 dental packets
-Alison mails in dental x-rays

March 26:
-Nick gets two fillings and two wisdom teeth out.
-Alison receives calls for additional short paragraphs and pathology from flags on medical report. Is informed that these would be nice but are not required for clearance.
-Alison goes to UF and finds Nick's shot records from the student healthcare center.

March 27:
-Alison and Nick go to the health department for a polio vaccination/Td booster.
-Alison faxes in the last 2 pieces of the medical packets - immunization forms.
-Alison and Nick fax in short essays about previous health incidents, including mole removal and use of an inhaler for a short time (Alison's packet is now complete).

March 28:
-Nick faxes in paperwork from a previous counselor, and his packet is complete.

March 30:
-Medically cleared!!!

End of April:
-we get invited

June 28:
-We go to staging on the west coast.

Well, those last few are our hopes anyway. Wish us luck.

  1. Good luck! I will have to find a way to come see you before you go...I think I might start work right after Memorial Day and it might be a little tricky after that. Keep me updated when you know your plans concretely. :)
